Do you have a canker sore? Are you trying to find relief from the discomfort they can bring? The good news is two-fold: you are not alone, and there are ways that you can treat your symptoms. Canker sores may be one of the most common infirmities in the dental health community, affecting roughly one in five people at some point in their life.

Types of Treatments
Typically, canker sores should dissipate within about two weeks. If they last longer, we recommend that you see Drs. Hatakeyama, Petrilli or Hatakeyama for a complete exam. Treatments for canker sores may include:
-Topical Pastes: There are over-the-counter, OTC, and prescription strength pastes that can help alleviate your discomfort and speed up the healing process.
-Mouth Rinses: If you have multiple canker sores, our dentists may prescribe a mouth rinse with a steroid called dexamethasone that may give you relief and help reduce the swelling. At home, you could try rinsing with a combination of salt water and baking soda or an OTC product with benzocaine which might numb the area. Ice chips can also help with the discomfort.
-Cauterization: In some cases, you may want to cauterize the sore.
